Sergeant Joshua J. Kirk, age 30, a native of Maine was killed in action on October 3, 2009 in the Kamdesh District of Nuristan Province, Afghanistan.  He was a Soldier in the 4th Infantry Division assigned to Fort Carson, Colorado.

Kirk was born in Thomaston, Maine.  He lived for a time in Idaho as a young child then returned to Maine.  He attended Camden Hills Regional High School and Southern Maine Community College and was also employed as a carpenter in the construction trade.  In the spring of 2005 he enlisted in the Army.  His was killed during his second tour in Afghanistan; he had previously served there for 15 months on his first tour.

He received numerous medals and awards during his service with the Army. These include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/ Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon , NATO Medal - 2, and Combat Action Badge.

He leaves behind his wife and a three-year-old daughter.
