Staff Sergeant Craig W.
Cherry, 39, of Winchester, Virginia died on August 7, 2004 in Ghazikel,
Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device struck his HMMWV.
He was assigned to the Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 116th
Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 29th Infantry Division (Light Infantry)
in Winchester, Virginia. He was killed two weeks after arriving in
Afghanistan. He was killed along with another member of his unit
and an Afghan interpreter. They were in the lead vehicle of a
convoy.
Craig Cherry grew up in Maine where he spent most of his childhood. His father, a Vietnam Veteran who served 20 years in the Navy and Coast Guard, still lives in Maine. Craig Cherry worked for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in the information technology department. He was due to retire from the National Guard in six months. SSG Cherry leaves behind a wife, two teenage children, and an 8-month-old son.
