Staff Sergeant Lynn Robert Poulin of Freedom, Maine was killed in an explosion at Forward Operating Base Marez near Mosul, Iraq on December 21st, 2004. He was a member of the 133rd Engineer Battalion of the Maine Army National Guard. SSG Poulin served as a metal worker with Company A and had served with the Maine National Guard for 23 years. |

SSG Poulin had served in Germany for three years in the early 1980's. He joined the Maine Army National Guard in 1984 and had been a member of the 133rd in Sept. 1993. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the VFW in Belfast. The 133rd Engineer Battalion is headquartered in Gardiner and Portland with several detachments in Belfast, Gardiner, Lewiston, Norway, Portland, Saco, Skowhegan, and Waterville. SSG Poulin was with Company A of the 133rd Eng Bn in Belfast, Maine. It is a heavy combat engineer unit that performs construction projects, such as building roads, airfields, and buildings, including the installation of electrical wiring and plumbing systems. The unit was activated in late 2003 and was deployed to Iraq in March 2004. Another member of the 133rd Engineer Battalion, Specialist Thomas Dostie, was also killed in the attack. Several members of the 133rd were injured in the attack. A Mass with military honors was held on Thursday, December 30th at the Notre Dame Church in Waterville, Maine. SSG Poulin was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. He was posthumously promoted to Staff Sergeant.
